この場合の こんなに多い は there were this many と表現できます。
～とは思わなかった は I didn't think that ー と表現すると良いです。
That を入れないで表現するのも可能です。
「年間がんで亡くなるのがこんなに多いとは思わなかった」
"I didn't think there were this many who die from cancer annually"
I never would have thought it was such a big number.
この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。
ーI didn't think it was that many people.
「そんな多くの人だとは思わなかった」＝「そんなに多いとは思わなかった」
ーI never would have thought it was such a big number.
「そんなすごい数だとは思いもしなかった」＝「そんなに多いとは思わなかった」
